Francis Towne (1739–1816) is 'rightly regarded as one of the truly original geniuses' of English watercolour painting of the eighteenth century. His subjects – Wales, the Lake District, Rome, the Alps – were treated with an original dazzling clarity and freshness. This catalogue was for a rare exhibition produced by John Spink and held at Colnaghi's London. Care in accurate colour reproduction and printing on paper specially suited for watercolours resulted in a catalogue that was able to convey the outstanding quality of Towne's paintings.
